Born Robert Clark in 1928, Robert Indiana is an American Pop Artist whose work presents iconic and simple messages we all have encountered, such as LOVE, EAT, DIE or more recently HOPE, in line with the themes favored by the first Pop Artists. Indiana’s LOVE started as a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, before being extended to serigraphs and other media including US Postal Service stamps. Countless unauthorized products followed, contributing to the untrue assumption that the artist is selling on all fronts.

 

In 2008, applying a similar recipe to that of LOVE, his HOPE reproductions raised more than $1,000,000 for Barrack Obama’s first successful presidential campaign. He also worked on less conventional grounds, designing the basketball court of the Milwaukee Exposition Convention Center Arena in 1977 and the stage and costumes for several operas across the United States. Based on Vilnalhaven, Maine, Indiana's latest works celebrate the life and habits of the island.
